Ice and polar waters are not only a weather problem. Under the IMO Polar Code they are also a temperature and operational-limits problem. Before a vessel commits to a season or a route, owners and masters need to know whether Mean Daily Low Temperature (MDLT) along that passage sits inside the ship’s polar capability — and they need that answer in the same place where the route, ENC holdings and shore approval already live.

Chart Track and polarcodepass.com work together so that their MDLT data layer and the PolarCodePass application sit inside CT Insights. The partnership was announced in August 2024 as an exclusive collaboration for Chart Track Insights. The goal is practical: safer voyage planning for fleets that trade in polar waters, without asking the bridge or the office to jump between unrelated tools.

What MDLT and PolarCodePass add

Polarcodepass.com was built to give access to ten years of historical temperature data aligned with IMO Polar Code requirements. Along an intended route it evaluates periods and regions of safe passage against the vessel’s temperature limitations. In CT Insights that becomes a Polar Code MDLT overlay with coverage in both polar areas, plus Polar Code Pass verification as part of passage planning and route hazard checks.

For day-to-day use that means:

• route-specific MDLT checks before and during polar planning
• easy import of route transfer files
• a clear view for owners, operators and crew
• support for keeping the Polar Water Operational Manual (PWOM) and Safety Management System assessment in step with the planned voyage

Weather layers in CT Insights (including ice coverage where provided in the weather pack) remain available in the same map. MDLT temperature limits and ice/weather context can therefore be reviewed together with the optimised route, rather than in a separate browser tab that never meets the ENC picture.

Where it sits in the Chart Track stack
